How is consciousness shaped by new media?

In what ways are spirituality and identity impacted by new media and computer technology?

In what ways do new media promote an understanding of life and life forms?

What creative and imaginative ways can we think about planetary connectivity, virtual community-building, and information dissemination?

How can art, science, and business work together on large scale projects effectively?

How is technology testing the limits of our humanity?

These are some of the questions that will be asked at the symposium, "Shaping Consciousness: New Media, Spirituality, and Identity." Topics at the symposium cover a range of subjects, including collaboration between artists and scientists, consciousness studies, mythology, new media theory and practice, technology, embodiment theory, telematics, biological organisms, and identity. Featured speakers include 21 members of the Planetary Collegium, an intellectual community of internationally renown new media scholars-artists housed at the University of Plymouth in England, with a campus, or "node," located in Zurich, Switzerland at the Hochschule fuer Gestaltung und Kunst, Zurich (HGKZ), led by internet art pioneer Dr. Roy Ascott. The Planetary Collegium takes "a transdisciplinary perspective [that] seeks the integration of art, science, technology, and consciousness research within a post-biological culture, and is involved in advancing the parameters of creative practice in consort with developments in telematics, mixed reality, alife, architecture, hypermedia, agent technology, nanotechnology, transgenics, data imaging, intelligent environments, generative music, and technoetics).

It is designed to produce new knowledge for the new millennium; new language, new systems, new structures, new behaviours, and new insights into the nature of mind, matter and human identity. It takes a constructive and pro-active approach to the social, technological and spiritual aspirations of the emerging planetary society, while sustaining a critical awareness of the retrograde forces and fields that inhibit social harmony and cultural transformation."
